This gem was cut from rough recovered at a small find near the village of Ndowa in northern Malawi while we were living there. The deposit was not much larger than a room in your home. John visited the site and recovered a little cuttable rough. The crystals that were recovered there were very similar to Moroccan amethysts in zoning and many were scepters which we foolishly made into pendants and gave away.

Garnets are members of a family of gems of similar chemical structure but slightly different chemical composition. We are listing garnets in groups according to their classifications as family members.
Andradite Garnets
Andradite garnets include demantoid, topazolite varieties.
Demantoid garnets are andradite garnets that contain chromium which can be determined by a simple Chelsea filter test. Many of the demantoid garnets from Russia contain “horse tail” inclusions while those from other locations do not contain similar inclusions.

Grandite garnets area hybrid of 68% grossular and 32% andradite garnets found mostly in Mali, West Africa. Their discovery during the late 1900’s created quite a stir in the gem world. Their colors can be quite unlike any other member of the garnet family.

We saw none until a few years ago when a parcel appeared in the inventory of a gem cutter who had passed away, so we quickly acquired it. We have heard the deposit was actually mined out and it is now considered extinct.

We visited this area during our trip to Tanzania in January of 2020. The area is both remote and quite harsh, but the trip was well worth seeing this well-known location for fine gems from Tanzania.

Smoktrine is a variety of quartz that displays a strong yellow hue accented with brown. They are quite different when placed next to smoky quartz. The deposit was first identified in 2018 and has produced rough that will cut gems over 200 carats in size. The deposit is currently under claim by Robyn Erler who also facets many of the gems that are mined there and can be seen on our website gemaholics.com in addition to those pictured here which were cut by John A. Rhoads. A limited amount of rough is available to other gem cutters. Inquiries are welcomed.

Dk Brown, 5.85 cts oval brilliant cut measuring 13.6×11.5×8.4 mm, v lt incl, from Texas. Bediasites are much like Moldavites and Libyan Glass in that they are impact glass believed to have formed as the result of a meteorite strike and in this case the one that formed the Gulf of Mexico. Once fairly common in the area of Bedia, Texas and thus their name they have become very rare in recent years. This one was cut from one that was collected many years ago and was purchased from a collection during the 1990’s.

The mines in the state of San Luis Potosi have been producing facet grade danburite for years although we hear that it occurs in zones within the mine and is not always available. Here this we have acquired a quantity of rough that should last us the rest of cutting lifetime.

Md Dk Green, 2.36 cts emerald brilliant cut measuring 9.5×5.8×4.9 mm, eye clean, from Kenya. It is reported that the rough from which this gem was cut was mined in Tsavo National Park not far from the tsavorite garnet mines. We have not seen this color in an idocrase from any other location in the world.

Despite the inclusions this gem displays nice brilliance and is very affordable compared to gems of finer clarity.
